The award-winning Arbib Nature & Heritage Trail showcases the architecture of Barbados, local flora and fauna, and the area’s history. Suitable for families and participants from 5-85 years, there’s much to see and enjoy while hiking this popular trail.

  • Take in the commanding views of the west coast from the Old Dover Fort & Signal Station
  • Experience the Whim Gully as you learn about the unique geology of Barbados
  • Take off your shoes and enjoy the refreshing tropical waters on a beach walk
  • See indigenous Barbados Blackbelly sheep

Enjoy a 3-hour hike along a trail developed by the Barbados National Trust that shows visitors a variety of the island’s natural, cultural, and historical sites. Humpback whales passed through the waters of Barbados years ago. Learn about the whaling industry of old from your guide. It’s even possible that you may be visiting at the right time to see these magnificent denizens of the deep enjoying themselves offshore. The optional Whim Adventure section of the trail is for the more adventurous, sure-footed hikers. Scrambling over boulders and walking upon uneven surfaces all the way is the order of the day. Your walk begins in the quaint commercial center of Speightstown, and heads inland to an area where the commercial area gives way to a small residential area called Round De Town, and from there to the natural environment of the Whim. Under the tree canopy of this peaceful and cool section of the Whim your guide will tell you about the geology of Barbados. From here it’s up a short hill to a residential area, where you’ll have a chance to interact with some of the local residents. Then we go to a high school where you’ll see the remnants of the Old Dover Fort & Signal Station. Overlooking northern Speightstown, this station was one of a series of signal stations in use during the 1800s to communicate across the island. This vantage point overlooks one of the island's largest Amerindian settlement sites, which was prized real estate over 1,500 years ago, and remains so today. You’ll hear about the Barbados Amerindian story as you hold authentic Amerindian tools in your hands. Descending the cliff by an easily accessible route, you’ll leave the school behind as you make our way onto the beach and finally back into Speightstown, where the hike began.
