It is certainly a family affair when it comes to the art in the Best of Barbados Gift Shops! The beautiful art and giftware designs by company founder, Jill Walker, are now complimented by those of her daughter, Sue Trew…and Sue’s daughter Holly. It makes their shops unique!
To celebrate their Three Generations of Art, this gifted family exhibited together for the first time at the Gallery of Caribbean Art in Speightstown from 25th March to 12th April 2012. The show lived up to expectations of being vibrant and colourful with a wonderful variety of skilful imagery - paintings inspired from simple events like evening walks on the beach, trips to buy fish and observations while driving, to more exotic situations like sailing trans-Atlantic on a Tall Ship and volunteering on a game park in Botswana.
For the many fans of this talented family and their gift shops that exist worldwide, the whole art show - and all future originals - are being featured on their web site www.best-of-barbados.com/original-paintings. This is an exciting new category which allows visitors to their site to buy originals by Sue and Holly in particular – and Jill occasionally agrees to part with one, “as long as it is going to a good home!”
Also available at the gallery is Jill Walker's new book Chattel Houses. Preview a book sample below.
Artist Jill Walker is well known for her charming prints of Barbados - and beautiful giftware designs – sold through her family’s shops. On her arrival in Barbados over 50 years ago, Jill fell in love with the people and the culture and began painting her surroundings, by chance recording a lifestyle that is, in places, slowly disappearing. Following in the family tradition, Jill’s daughter, Sue Trew - a gifted artist herself - is proud to have introduced her own delightful range of prints and giftware designs into their shops. Their art is the perfect reminder of your Barbados visit, bringing their Bajan sunshine to your home.
