Open Houses, presented by the Barbados National Trust as a winter season tradition for over 30 years, are held Wednesdays and some Saturdays from 2:30-5:30pm during the months of January to March. This is your chance to see some of the island's most beautiful homes! Visitors and locals alike can enjoy the architecture and history of privately owned homes. Enjoy a garden party atmosphere, with fresh fruit juices, homemade rum punch and snacks served on the lawns. Books on Barbados and the Caribbean are also available for purchase, and a small selection of artists and craftspeople display their art for sale.
Originally built in the eighteenth century as a sugar plantation, Cockade House is set in 2.5 acres and was part of Bennetts Plantation. It was later redesigned and transformed by the renowned English theatre designer, Oliver Messel, in 1971. Thanks to Oliver Messel's tasteful decoration and design, Cockade House is now one of the most exclusive properties on the island hidden behind a driveway of Mahogany trees with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and Sandy Lane Golf Course. The main house offers 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, study, living and dining room, a large, well-equipped kitchen with pantry, terraces and an inviting swimming pool, beauifully framed by a delightful arched folly, lily pond and garden pathway. Additional bedrooms and bathrooms are available in the separate guest cottage and self-contained pavillion. There is also a small office and staff quarters located behind the cottage.
