Open Houses, presented by the Barbados National Trust as a winter season tradition for over 30 years, are held Wednesdays and some Saturdays from 2:30-5:30pm during the months of January to March. This is your chance to see some of the island's most beautiful homes! Visitors and locals alike can enjoy the architecture and history of privately owned homes. Enjoy a garden party atmosphere, with fresh fruit juices, homemade rum punch and snacks served on the lawns. Books on Barbados and the Caribbean are also available for purchase, and a small selection of artists and craftspeople display their art for sale.
In the 1830s, Leamington House was the seat of a plantation that stretched down to the sea. In the 1950s, Oliver Messel stayed there and was so enthused that he persuaded his friends the Heinzes (of Heinz ketchup fame) to buy it, with the lure that he would decorate it. Some of his furnishings still hold pride of place in this timelessly elegant home.
Guided tours will take small groups into the structure, and Dr. Karl Watson will lecture at 3:30.
