Learn the history of the world's oldest rum - it is an absolutely fascinating story, explaining how a plantation in Barbados' northern parish of St. Lucy can today boast of a rich 300-year history of rum production. This unique story is incredibly and excitingly told through the narratives, artifacts, black-and-white photo galleries, film, datelines, prints, slide shows and taste-testings that make up one of the island's most frequented tours, the Mount Gay Rum Tour. Chester Browne, the International Brand Ambassador and Mixologist at Mount Gay Visitor Centre rum tasting, was named The Global Ambassador for Rum 2010.

The tour begins by stepping way back into the past, into the year 1637, just after the time when sugar was first brought to the island. You will learn about the original Gilboa Plantation, which later became Mount Gay, and of the copper pot sills, ageing vats, and sun-driven fermentation processes involved in the making of rum. And, in a typical rum-shop styled setting, you can even watch a wonderful film that will teach you the intricacies of rum aging and blending. Rum blending is a rare skill learned over many years. Mount Gay's two rum blenders are held in very high esteem internationally. Also not to be missed is the viewing of the bottling area that prepares over 15,000 bottles of Mount Gay Rum each day, over 70% of which is sold to international markets.

At the end of the tour you may like to visit the centre's well-stocked gift shop where hats, T-shirts, postcards, key chains, and, of course, souvenir bottles of Mount Gay Rum may be purchased. Lunch tours are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Open Monday through Friday, this tour tells the story of the world's oldest and finest rum - Mount Gay Rum of Barbados.
