Description

On this tour we will visit the most popular places southwest of Coimbra. We'll visit the Sanctuary of Fátima, the UNESCO-listed Monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça and the picturesque fishing village of Nazaré. The Sanctuary of Fátima is, par excellence, a place of Christian pilgrimage and Catholic devotion, preserving the memory of the events that led to its foundation, namely the apparitions of Our Lady of Fátima to the three little shepherds, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta in 1917. We'll go to Aljustrel, to the so-called Aldeia de Valinhos, the place where the shepherd children lived, and at the shrine we'll visit the Basilicas of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Most Holy Trinity, the most recent, and the Chapel of the Apparitions where, with a bit of luck, you'll have the opportunity to attend a mass. We continue on to Batalha to visit the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, better known as the Monastery of Batalha. Imposing, it stands out for its monumentality and the lacy stone on the outside, marks that make it easily identifiable. It consists of a church, two cloisters and two royal pantheons, the Founder's Chapel and the Imperfect Chapels. Once the tour is over, we head to Alcobaça to visit the Alcobaça Monastery, which has a prominent place, not only because of its history of almost 900 years, but also because it is an outstanding example of Cistercian architecture, possessing the largest Early Gothic style church built in Portugal during the Middle Ages. After Alcobaça, we head towards the sea, to the town of Nazaré, where we'll begin our visits to the Sanctuary, the Sítio, the northern beach where you can watch the waves and end up in the town's narrow, labyrinthine streets. At a time to be arranged, we'll return to our starting point in Coimbra.
