Open Houses, presented by the Barbados National Trust as a winter season tradition for over 30 years, are held Wednesdays and some Saturdays from 2:30-5:30pm during the months of January to March. This is your chance to see some of the island's most beautiful homes! Visitors and locals alike can enjoy the architecture and history of privately owned homes. Enjoy a garden party atmosphere, with fresh fruit juices, homemade rum punch and snacks served on the lawns. Books on Barbados and the Caribbean are also available for purchase, and a small selection of artists and craftspeople display their art for sale.
When Sandford Plantation was subdivided, the Atwells bought a 5-acre parcel with a quarry and bit of gully and hired renowned architect, Kenneth Gardner, to design their house. The result is a 3-storey fortress in mid-century-meets-tropical style, rising from the stone cavity and accessed by a footbridge. It later turned out to be perfect for an artist and her family: Lilian Sten Nicholson has given it great vibes and an eclectic, international feel to each distinctive space. Her studio and work are explorable today.
